VisuaLinks Web Access Quick Start Guide

VisuaLinks Web Access is an optional feature that you may implement in your environment with the appropriate licensing. The vl.visualanalytics.com Web Access is an evaluation system - letting you take a look at and work with some of the features of VisuaLinks to help you decide whether VisuaLinks will fit well in your environment.

To get started, all you need to do is:

Log On

The first step in using any VisuaLinks client application, including the Web Access client, is to log on. This verifies that you are an authorized user and gives you access to the data available.

For an evaluation or demonstration, please contact Visual Analytics at sales@visualanalytics.com or 1-877-407-4VAI (4824).

VisuaLinks Web Access operates in a number of diverse environments. In most cases, you'll want to use the "Flash" configuration. The Flash configuration provides a much richer, more robust set of options for working with your data.

1.

Click the Config icon.

Result: The page updates to display the Configuration settings.

2.

If necessary, in the Show Preview Picture area, select the as Flash option.

3.

Click the Apply button.

Create a Search

The Query service lets you search your data for specific values. This example walks through setting up a query for suspects with the last name of Dolan.

1.

Click the Query icon.

Result: The page updates to display the Query settings.

2.

Use the Models drop-down to select the data set you want to search.

A data set is any data brought together by a "model." Any model can represent any number of data fields in any number of databases. The model defines the various entities (objects) in the data and how they are related (associations).

For this example, we'll search the Tracker-All model.

Result: The page updates to let you choose the data type (object) you
want to search.

An object defines the types of entities in your data. An object might be a person, an address, an ID number, a weapon, or any number of other types of item.

3.

Use the Object Types drop-down to select the type of object you want to search.
For this example, we'll search the SUSPECT type.

4.

In the text field below the attribute name, type the value you want to search for.

An attribute is a value that describes an object (or association). An attribute essentially represents a field value in a data base. Some attributes for a person object might be first and last names, birth date, eye color, hair and height and weight measurements.

For this example, we'll search for suspects with the last name of Dolan, To do so, we'll type Dolan in the LAST_NAME attribute field.

5.

Click OK.

Result: VisuaLinks searches for data that matches your criteria. Any matches found are displayed.

Review the Results

When VisuaLinks finds data matching the values you enter, the results are displayed, as icons, in a working, "View" area. This area gives you a number of options for further exploring the results.

One of the things you can do is review the details, or field values, for the results found.

1.

In the toolbar, click the Details Mode icon.

2.

Select the items for which you want to display details.
Because we have only one item in our example, we can simply click the image of the object. To select multiple items, you would click and drag to select.

Result: A table displays at the bottom of the window showing items details (field values).

3.

Scroll across the table to view all of the details for the object(s).
Tip: You can use the Show/Hide Details icon to remove the details table from the display at any time.

Look for Related Data

The VisuaLinks Walk tool searches your data sources looking for additional, related data. It automatically searches the data set from which the original objects were retrieved, looking for data related to the original objects, by any type of association.

1.

In the toolbar, click the Walk Mode icon.

2.

Select the object(s) for which you want to look for related data.
Because we have only one item in our example, we can simply click the image of the object. To select multiple items, you would click and drag to select.

Result: A processing message displays in the lower, left-hand corner. When the search is complete, any data found is added to the display.

3.

Click the Walk Mode icon again.

4.

Select several objects for which you want to look for related data.
In this example, we'll select only the organizations.

Result: A processing message displays in the lower, left-hand corner. When the search is complete, any data found is added to the display.
